maternity leave A temporary period of absence from employment granted to expectant or new mothers during the months immediately before and after childbirth. These policies are generally aimed at supporting the mother’s full recovery from childbirth and facilitating a stronger mother-child bond. This mechanism has gained greater salience as mothers increasingly enter the workforce. Maternity leave policies are typically directed by legislation and includes a provision mandating unpaid leave annually (12 weeks, in some jurisdictions) for mothers of newborn or newly adopted children. This policy is characterized, in some industrialized countries, by its relative scarcity of benefits, in terms of the short length of protected maternity leave and not offering some form of wage compensation for the leave of absence. Note: to address the broader needs of employees, legislation also mandates that employers offer “parental leave”, which generally includes maternity, paternity, and adoption leave. A distinction between “maternity leave” and “parental leave” is sometimes made: maternity leave as the mother’s leave time directly before and after childbirth and parental leave being the time given to care for newborns or young children. Private employers sometimes provider either or both unpaid and paid parental leave outside of or in addition to any legal mandate, while others reserve the right to meet the minimal legal obligation.
