Harry Dean Stanton talks about the character backgrounds written by Ridley Scott, especially Brett’s, in this excerpt from the Officially Authorized Magazine of the Movie ALIEN.
RM: Now, this list of Brett’s character … the “Brett Papers.” Did you learn those verbatim or what?
STANTON: I just thought about them a little bit and got a general sense of the kind of a guy Ridley visualized. I didn’t dwell on it a lot. But then I didn’t need to. They were specific things, like where he came from, what his father did, what his mother did, how many missions he had flown, and details like that. I can’t remember specifically how many there were. But there were specific facts about his past, his background, and his family. Just to give him some sort of sense as a human being, and not just some sketchy part. Ridley did all that. And he actively talked with everybody. He did a tremendous amount of work that actors usually do.
